It is located on the west coast of India near the extreme south of the mainland. Referred to by Mahatma Gandhi as the "Evergreen city of India", the city is characterized by its undulating terrain of low coastal hills and busy commercial alleys.
It is situated at the southern end of the state. The most famous beach in Kerala and also in India is the Kovalam beach in Thiruvananthapuram district. As this natural bay is a safe sea-pool free from high waves and ideal for swimming and surfing, it is attracted by travellers from all over the world. Kovalam also famous for its ayurvedic and naturopathic treatments. The Neyyar Dam and the lake there, boating and treking facilities, the Varkala Sree Narayana Guru's Sivagiri Mutt, Janardhana Swamy Temple near the beach of Varkala, Shankhumugham beach, Sree Padmanabha Swamy Temple, Pazhavangady Ganapathi Temple, Sree Chithra Art Gallery, Planetarium, zoo, Ponmudi, Veli, Anchuthengu fort, Botanical and Zoological gardens etc. are other attractions. Kovalam Beach - 17 km from Thiruvananthapuram City, is a world famous beach, noted being one of the finest. There are 2 large beaches and highly safe for swimming. A visit to Kovalam is must for Trivandrum. However the beach becomes too crowded during November-December time, when foreign tourists flock in mass. Shanghumugham Beach, a popular city beach noted for its cleanliness, is attracting most of the inside tourists.
The Varkala Sree Narayana Guru's Sivagiri Mutt, Janardhana Swamy Temple near the beach of Varkala, Shankhumugham beach, Thiruvananthapuram is named after the sacred serpent Anantha or Adisesha on which Lord Padmanabha reclines. The Anantha Padmanaswamy temple is the most famous landmark of the city. Pazhavangady Ganapathi Temple, Sree Chithra Art Gallery, Planetarium, zoo, Ponmudi, Veli, Anchuthengu fort, Botanical and Zoological gardens etc. are other attractions. The city has a climate that borders between a tropical savanna climate and a tropical monsoon climate. The mean maximum temperature 34 °C and the mean minimum temperature is 21 °C. Foreign tourists use the city as a hub to explore the tourist cities Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala, like Rome, stands on seven hills, sloping towards the Arabian Sea. Kerala a land believed to have been raised from the sea and gifted to the Brahmins by Lord Parasurama. It is the most beautiful part of tropical India with evergreen forests. It is the land where six religions - Hinduism, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism and Islam – have peacefully co-existed through the centuries; the land where the Chinese and the Arabs, the Portuguese and the Dutch, the French and the English left their mark. Kerala has also witnessed European and Arab merchants lured by timber, ivory, pepper, ginger, cinnamon and other spices.
As the state capital district, Thiruvananthapuram is promoting a number of fast growing industrial units for industrial devolpment.. They included oil mills, cashew factories, cotton textiles, sawmills, printing units, rubber industrial units, Chemical units, match factories, general engineering units, chemical units, and automobile workshop. The district has some intrinsic merit in handicraft industries too .The product of handicraft has great demand in foreign countries. There are reputed science and technology institutions such as the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center (VSSC), Techno Park, the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) and the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER). Apart from these India’s first and only animation park is situated here. It is an ancient city with trading traditions dating back to 1000 BCE.
